  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 60 megawatt Tuirial hydro electric power project from Aizwal.
  2. World Health Organisation has declared Gabon a polio-free country, given the lack of new reported or suspected cases in the country.
  3. Oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated eastern India’s first compressed natural gas stations for scooters in Bhubaneswar.
  4. Indo-Maldives joint military exercise, ‘Ekuverin’ has begun at the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC-Belagavi). Focus of this exercise is to enhance interoperability b/w the two forces for counter-terrorist operations in semi urban environment.
  5. Roger Federer has been voted the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.
  6. Meghalaya became the first state in India to operationalise a law that makes social audit of government programmes and schemes. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma launched ‘The Meghalaya Community Participation and Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017’, at a national convention in Shillong.
  7. The first ever International Wheelchair Cricket Tournament has commenced in Nepal’s Kathmandu. The tournament has participation of teams from Nepal, India & Bangladesh which is supported by Sushil Koirala Memorial Foundation & technical assistance from Kathmandu Cricket Training Center.
  8. RBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 5 crore on Syndicate Bank for non-compliance with its directions on “Cheque Purchase or Discounting, Bill Discounting, and KYC norms. The penalty was imposed by RBI after considering the bank’s reply and oral submissions made in the personal hearing.
  9. FIFA has suspended the head of Brazilian football federation Marco Polo Nero for 90 days. Nero was accused of accepting 6.5mn euro commission. In the wake of these accusations, ethics committee opened an inquiry that led to his suspension.
  10. UIDAI has temporarily barred Airtel & Airtel Payment Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based SIM verification of mobile customers using eKYC process. The action follows allegations of Airtel using Aadhaar-eKYC to open payments bank accounts of its subscribers without their informed consent.
  11. Dish TV has received the final approval from the government for closing its merger with Videocon d2h, the DTH arm of Videocon Industries Ltd. The new entity will called Dish TV Videocon Limited. The combined entity will serve more than 29 million subscribers.
  12. Women to drive trucks, bikes in Saudi Arabia. After allowing to drive, Saudi Arabia has now permitted females to drive trucks and ride bikes. Women involved in road accidents or who commit traffic violations will be dealt with at special centres that will be established and run by women.
  13. The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved a scheme to provide a pension of Rs 1500 to transgender above 18 years of age in the state. Under this scheme the transgender will be provided ration cards, plots and scholarships, also skill development for financial stability. After Kerala and Odisha, Andhra Pradesh becomes the next state to sanction pension scheme for the transgender community.
  14. Union cabinet has decided to bear the merchant discount rate (MDR) applicable on digital payments via debit cards, etc, up to Rs. 2,000. The MDR applicable on digital transactions will be borne by the govt for a period of 2 years with effect from 1 Jan. MDR is the charge paid by a merchant to a bank for accepting payment from customers via credit or debit cards.
  15. Google will shut down its Augmented Reality platform Tango built specifically for smartphones from March 2018. It is seen as a bid to focus on a new software development kit called ARCore that brings AR experience closer to Android users. Tango allows developers to create user experiences that include indoor navigation, 3D mapping, environmental recognition, AR & windows into a virtual world.
